I O U

An explanation.

I'm in the second & final year of my masters programme. It's brought out the worst in me.

I talk too much
smoke too much
drink too much
sleep too much
eat way too much.

But I feel like I need to move on from this sad version of me and bring out the awesome one.

Chaos, how've you been?

Afternoon spliff

You know what's my favourite time of the day?

That hour right after a nice 1 pm mini meal known as lunch. 2 pm to 3 pm in summer, winter, monsoon, autumn...it's not too late in the 24 hour cycle but not too early either. Just right to get into bed with a cozy book and maybe drift into a nap.

I'm hella high.

12 Days

12 days till Bombay.

Another city. More new people. Two more years of college. Dread and fear and stress and excitement and lots and lots and lots of hope.

Revival

After months of feeling like a shitty untalented prick of a person, endless tea cups and crying snivelling phone conversations with Ze Boyfriend, I'm typing this as a graduate!

*cue awkward dancing in a saree*

I cannot put into words the complete LACK OF STRESS in my body and mind. Can you imagine college being over? It feels surreal. No more late night texts to sleeping housemates asking them to wake me up the next day; no more end-of-the-month-broke-people-food like bread and butter; no more woefully staring at the Nutella jars on the supermarket shelf, wondering when you're going home next where Nutella is boundless.

Of course being at home has disadvantages too, like how much these 4 years are going to shape the way I think and how much I'll miss them, all the goddamn time. Not to mention the people.

Oh man.

Anyway I don't want to go down that road right now because where I am right now is the best feeling in the world, with these graduate idiots I call my friends.

This is just to say hi, Chaos, and to tell you I'm back, Professional Diploma in Visual Communication Design and all.

Love,
Kanika

This should be fun

I've been taking very long baths.

Since I'm not at home currently (and it feels so weird to be back in that college time hobo living phase) baths take longer because I must

- wash clothes
- clean bathroom before I bathe
- wipe bathroom floor after I bathe
- carry my toiletries into the bathroom and back into the suitcase
- carry sogging clothes out to the balcony in a heavy ass bucket

But none of this^ can bring down the joy of finding that sweet spot between Antarctica Freezing and Hot as Hell, standing under that strong force of warm water and somehow feeling all your shitty responsibilities clear off your skin, not to mention all the time you get to wallow in your mistakes and find ways to feel invigorated again.

If only.

Haha, anyhow. My final life-determining jury presentation is tomorrow. The amount of stress is my body is making me sick, and it's making me think back to my 12th standard boards. Of course I know now what I didn't know then: the 12th standard boards aren't stressful at all compared to what life throws at you later. But suddenly the still 16 year old side of me began to sulk at her one biggest worry being trivialised. Come to think of it, the stress never really goes away, rather manifests itself in whatever you need to be worried about at that age.

I need to sleep before I pass the point of waking up on time. And Jesus, I sound like a rambling drunk person.

I'll come back to you with jury results, Chaos. Keep the alcohol ready.

because I'm doing exactly what I should be doing at this point: watching Grey's Anatomy and forgetting what day it is.

Love,
Kanika

p.s. follow me on instagram! I'm way more active than a normal human being should be.

Reasons why I'm a fail

I'm disappointed to say this (because I feel like I've done it too many times before) but I can't keep up with Astonishing August.

There are 80000000 things that contribute to my having to say this. They are all important and must figure higher on my list of priorities than blogging everyday, and I feel terrible about that. Half of these reasons are to do with my diploma project, and my failure to keep up with so many things at once. As Ze Boyfriend put it when I complained about AA, "You take on more in an attempt to prove you aren't procrastinating, but you are." And he's right. In those moments of immediate and intense inspiration, I don't focus it on the small things but rather create a multitude of other commitments I must share my mindspace for. And it's not a good idea.

Of course my diploma project needs to be the attention whore in my life for the next 2 months, and it's safe to say that concentrating is not my strong suit. I keep trying to think back to how in hell I was able to sit for hours on end doing integration and differentiation back in 12th standard: the answer is I did not have a goddamn laptop of my own, I did not have a phone that could access wifi, I don't think the internet at home was even wi-fi enabled at the time. And now it's all just "yeah lemme just quickly check pinterest and tumblr and twitter and 9gag" and when I feel I'm procrastinating it's "lemme just check some design blogs and get lost in the brilliance that is graphic design so much so that I feel demotivated."

Apart from that, being sick for almost 2 and a half weeks is by far the most tiring thing. Can you imagine coughing so hard that you get dizzy and need to sit down for a minute? That's been happening to me too many times in a day. And it's all just a common cold/flu. It shouldn't have taken it so long, it's almost kinda settled in my chest and every morning my throat is burning in all kinds of different ways. How fucking sad is that. I should be able to handle myself better, because this is very scary actually. And I need to focus on this too, because it's coming in the way of everything else.

The third giant chunk is being at home, which was necessary for a variety of reasons, mainly that I have working parents and my grandparents are almost too old to be able to handle household stuff on their own. It's tons of responsibility and I'm super glad to be there, but it takes a huge amount of time and to balance this on top of everything else is becoming a chore of its own.

I'm really really sorry to everyone who wanted to participate, and a special sorry to Akanksha because she was participating nearly every single day and now I'm a dick to cut this short in between. I don't think I should start this kinda thing up again until I'm absolutely sure I have the time to devote to it (since this is the third time I'm cutting this venture short). However I'll be blogging still, once I'm over being ashamed.

Love in embarrassment,
Kanika

p.s. I've reverted all the AA posts to drafts, so they're not deleted. Maybe in a while when I don't hate myself so much I'll put them back up. :(

Beginning / End

Over the past week, I had to pack up my Bangalore life into cartons and suitcases. Somehow shut 4 years of memories & love and happiness and relationships into boxes and send them back home. And then I had to leave too.

Of course it did not hit me till the taxi driver called and asked for directions, & suddenly I was blubbering and tearing up over the phone. I spent 4 years waiting to leave this place and when I was at the end all I wanted was another day in that house, making maggi at 3 am and drinking quietly in the balcony so that our landlord wouldn't get to know and watching Friends with Ze Boyfriend while sitting on the same cartons I had just finished packing, holding his hand really tightly because I knew in a few hours I'd be too far away.

[it's not like I won't see him. I still have my final diploma project left to do, I just chose to do it in Delhi. I'll see him soon. :)]

I hated leaving, and last minute my friends decided to drop me to the airport; one showed up with his car, so the taxi left with other people with flights at the same time. I cried quietly all the way to the airport, I cried when I had to hug everyone, I cried when I got to the check-in counter (thinking about it right now is forming a lump in my throat) and I realised it was harder to leave Bangalore than it was to leave Delhi 4 years ago.

I've been home for a couple of days now. Sorry about the silence. Just lots of things to miss.

The very sweet Anjali has given me a blog award and it requires some do-ing; give me a day or two to adjust to all this upheaval and I'll be back. (:

Lots of love,
Kanika

Punctuating

Happy birthday to a very tired-sounding mother.

Speaking to my family is not a regular deal for me; we probably have a 15 minute conversation every two-three days. It makes me miss home horrendously, even after 4 years of being away from them. I always know what'll be happening at home when I get a call; I can hear people talking in the background and I can hear my father's old hindi music blasting from the speakers and I can hear my grandmother asking how much rice to cook and my sister's interjecting from the back and asking if I heard that particular song she sent me and my mother tells me about family get-togethers and everyone always asks me when I'm coming home for my next vacation...it's an overwhelming amount of things to suddenly miss and just after the conversation ends I feel weird for a while. As if being there amidst all that chaos would somehow give me the peace of mind I'm craving right now.

Summer vacations are being planned, and I think my parents have forgotten the FINAL PROJECT I AM SUPPOSED TO BE STARTING IN JULY ON THE BASIS OF WHICH I WILL GRADUATE (OR WON'T, DEPENDING ON WHETHER I MAKE A HASH OF IT OR NOT). But the plan is to go to our favorite kind of holiday destination, a secluded hill-spot, where the pine trees are too tall to look up at and the drives are long and beautiful with Paul Simon singing along, so I refuse to crib about it. I need that kind of de-stressing sojourn so desperately.

No more whining. Let's beat this Sunday.

Lost Causes & Midnight Chocolate Breaks

To say it doesn't affect me would be a giant, stinking lie.

Anyone who's known me for more than half a second is aware of my habit of getting overly attached to everything and everyone that/who is nice to me in the vaguest manner, even they don't mean to be nice and accidentally showed me some courtesy. It's a horrendously weak habit to be a slave to, because strange things can make you feel too shitty for words and stranger things can make you smile. Sometimes I'm confused about why I feel a certain way and then I realize it's an involuntary reaction which should always be voluntary.

Of course it's hard to change that about yourself but I've been trying yet, unsuccessfully so. It's a thankless process with little or no results, infuriating and frustrating beyond belief.

And if you ask me what's put me in this mood, I'll think of reasons that I'll be ashamed to list; I'm letting ordinary people who suck get into my head and argue with the voice that lives there.

Anyhow. Last three weeks of college. The diploma project email was received last night. Time to stress.

Love,
Kanika

p.s. Big thank you to Kritika (her blog is here) for the Creative Blogger Award (YAY) which I received from Akanksha last week. I request your permission to not follow the rules this time, since i did it so recently. Mwahaha.

The Beach Calls!

Here are some pictures of my ultra cool and cozy room, which I'll be away from for another 4 days because, I AM GOING TO GOA!

*CUE GIRLISH HIGH-PITCHED SHRIEKING*

Last night all my housemates and I had such a blast trying on each other's clothes and exchanging them for the duration of our mid-semester break! Full on girly sleepover.

I made all those giant posters! ^:)

So guys, miss me for another 4 days, and then I'll be back with pictures of me in decent clothes :)

Love in much excitement,
Kanika

!

*roommate leaves*
*cue dramatic singing into hairbrush in front of mirror*

"Now that she's back in the atmosphere
With drops of Jupiter in her hair, hey, hey
She acts like summer and walks like rain
Reminds me that there's time to change, hey, hey
Since the return from her stay on the moon
She listens like spring and she talks like June, hey, hey

Tell me did you sail across the sun
Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated

Tell me, did you fall for a shooting star
One without a permanent scar
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there?"

Wait, are you telling me you DON'T think all songs with meaningful lyrics are written for your life, and your life alone? That's sad. :P

I need the perfect playlist every morning to bring me out of my daily morning grump and put me into crazy work mode, and I thought I'll drop in here to say hi before I disappear into a mound of design-student-woes today. So hi :)

Also, in case anyone's interested in what I've been listening to, here.

And since I haven't been talking to you guys much, I thought I'll try much much harder. It's possible you're going to be reading too much of me!

Love,
Kanika

Unbearable

Somedays it's an explicable spring in my step, some nights an imponderable gloom, and an almost constant will to express but no strength to articulate my brain.

It's been a struggle to not care about the shitty things that happen in a day (because everyone tells you not to care) but I care anyway. It's easier than trying not to. And I feel better about not denying anything that goes on in my head.

I am slowly beginning to realise the things that make me happy. A clean table, a plant on my desk, a good cup of tea, laughing with friends, a cozy nap in the afternoon, people who lend books, a lovable bulldog puppy who plonks his butt into your lap and demands attention, my new-and-improved fairy lights (photos soon!), sharing a cigarette in the dark in the balcony, logo design books, and I could go on and list things that seem so tiny but add up to really really fulfilling days.

All of this, and Fantabulous February is up soon! I almost cannot contain the joy right now :D

So for people who don't know what FF is (where have you been?!) let me take you through.

Fantabulous February is an exercise I cooked up to keep myself engaged in writing, because I began to feel at this time last year that I was losing my love for the written word. It goes like this: every day for the month of February, I'll be posting an image or quote or basically anything which is even half-inspiring, and by the end of the day, I'd have used that inspiration to write a post of my own. It's like forcing yourself into creativity. And the best part, anyone who wants to take part can do so, all you need to do is write a post on your blog, post the image/quote/etc. there too, and once you're done send me a link to that post, because I like including them here :)

This is the FF label, so you can see the crazy prose we came up with last time :) HERE.

YAY FOR BLOGGING AND BLOGGERS AND FEBRUARY AND LOVE AND EVERYTHING.

Love in ecstatic restlessness,
Kanika

1 AM and Diet Chips

Why do we dwell on the hurtful things, so much so that we have no space in our hearts and minds to dedicate to the good things? It's one of those human tendencies you promise yourself you'll break out of. To be able to find joy in the little stuff is a gift you are capable of receiving.

You know that people aren't nice so why waste time talking about exactly how un-nice they are? Spend that time lying down on your bed, staring at the ceiling and smiling when you think about your lunch and all its deliciousness. Take a walk with a camera and snap a photo of absolutely anything. Have impromptu 30-second dance marathons. Sit with friends who make you laugh.

Life is just too goddamn short to be angry with stupid people all the time. Wake up every morning with the drive to ignore them and concentrate on making each day extraordinary.

Stay lovely,
Kanika

The Perils of Cold Water Bathing

Since I am an internet-less wench no longer, it is now time to rejoice, sit at home in my blanket and still able to stalk people on Facebook. All is well.

Now I can tell you what I've been thinking and feeling for so many days in the past.

First things first, cold water baths suck. As much courage as it takes to pour that first mug on your head,  remember that even if you assume you'll be proud of this later, your shivering hands (even once you're out of the bathroom and fully clothed) will fuck up your kajal-applying abilities. Don't do it.

Second, I am having a torrid love affair with paanipuri (or golguppa, if you're from that part of the country, or puchka if you're a purist). I've exclaimed in the midst of absolute food heaven that there is no wound that paanipuri cannot heal for me. Current (and future, if any) boyfriend(s), be happy that it takes just a ten rupee plate of these delicious little flavor bombs to make me smile.

Thirdly, I am learning to be a person who does not overthink, overcare, overeat, overcry, overfeel. It's working wonders, my days are turning out beautifully.

The only dark shroud in this world of good things is a tiny problem with my shift key (which I wouldn't give two shits about had I not possessed a mac) and sometimes it makes me so sad I want to cry. But then I get back into point-number-three mode and tell myself it's just a machine, albeit amazing.

I'm just really happy about small things these days. It makes everything a lot more beautiful.

Stay happy!
Love,
Kanika

A Trodden Internet-less Wench

It's too many rules and responsibilities for my brain to process all at once but I'm trying really hard to not let this daze me. Everything's being shaken and thrown around. It's difficult to keep up. Not eating because I forget to, having aching legs but no time to deal with them, not having internet at home but still being way more connected than I need to be right now.

All this and Grey's Anatomy also sucks.

How is a girl supposed to look pretty during so much emotional upheaval? Hmm?

hi world.

I manage :P

Kanika

Ouch

4 am - 9 am coffee high!

These two weeks are all about

-finishing work and doing a good job
-waiting to go home
-drinking bucketloads of coffee
-hearing birds chirp at 5 am every day
-sneezing and sniffing through
-loving my laptop
-missing my camera
-HOME
-spending time with Ze Boyfriend....or not, because there's no goddamn time
-cursing about the number of hours in a day
-wondering why teachers do this to you
-crying in relief at a completed assignment
-article writing and stabbing myself with a fork
-staring judgementally at my sleeping roommate
-the possibility of carpal tunnel
-the hidden wonders of lozenges (hint: alcohol)
-not realising that I'm drooling at McDreamy
-Hooooommmmeeeee
-making lists and feeling productive
-not really feeling productive
-being productive anyway

I'll be keeping you posted.

We're Wrong

"We accept the love we think we deserve." - The Perks of Being A Wallflower

Being self-aware is a prized and difficult quality, and the moments of my own where I think I have begun to understand why I am the way that I am make me intensely proud. Right now, for example, I know I don't deserve this, and after days of dealing I'm finally acting on that realisation. Cutting out the hard, terrible and rusty part of the love and trying to keep only the parts that still work. It's not supposed to feel like this, like a punishment, like there is nothing better out there so you stick with the hurtful. Know what you deserve - something that makes you happy. Every person, bad or good, deserves that. I am not a bad person, as much as I'm being convinced.

Whatever happened to being scarred and broken but proud of it? Being complex and strange and weird but never berating yourself for being unsure?

I'm unsure. Complex. Moody. Sad, mostly. Difficult. But I love you. Let me love you anyway.

Kanika

Death By Design

Portfolio making has finally begun for me, much later than it should have, and I am dying.

My work from last year is shit, and if I don't put it in I don't have enough work to make it full enough.

Fuck man. Just fuck.

In another news, Bangalore is effing hot, my hair has grown, and my arms look humongous in that top.

For Want Of A Better Word

Hello helpful blogger friends,

I read all the suggestions and my friends here gave me a few of their own, and I promise I considered all of them...I tried to write on a couple of topics but it was much harder than I imagined. So I decided to wing it, let all my thinking and research go to waste, and came up with this.

And I'm pretty darn proud :')

Feedback is appreciated :)

For Want Of A Better Word

writ·er's block ((rtrz)
n.
A usually temporary psychological inability to begin or continue work on a piece of writing.

It’s a lot more difficult than anyone thinks.

For a person who constantly uses a keyboard or a pen to express how I feel, having the biggest writer’s block just before a creative writing assignment deadline is one of the most frustrating feelings in the world. I’m sitting here locked up in my room to avoid any distractions, human or otherwise, with my fairy lights on and a mug of coffee that was empty before I had typed out even a single word. For a blogger who writes a blog that more people than I expected read, it’s horrible to have seemingly unending periods of uninspiredness and tons of incomplete posts lying in my drafts folder waiting for a spark of…what’s the word? My command over vocabulary turns into a worthless bunch of words and phrases that just don’t fit what I’m about to say. Actually, I’m not even sure what the point of it is anymore.

Last minute stress works for me in most situations, so much that when nothing else succeeds, I can almost count on a burst of motivation to jolt my mind into action in the final hour. I don’t have a problem with articulation. My catch phrase is, “you know what I mean?” And mostly, you DO know. I can conjure up enough synonyms to get my meaning across without too much worrying. But there are points in time when words don’t flow, ink begins to blot, and my keys get clogged with dust.

I’ve tried free-writes with no constraints, I’ve tried mindmaps, even tried being utterly profane (because somehow cusswords come so very naturally when nothing else does). I find it easier to write in sadness, so I have gone to extent to depress myself into some state of written coherence. Heartbreak, nostalgia, empty Nutella jars, and reading SMS language all make for brilliant catalysts to break the wall of…another word for silence…that’s propped up in my head. And when I’m really desperate, I pick up the last Harry Potter and read the last three chapters. The battle of Hogwarts makes the tears flow like nobody’s business.

Hyperactivity, though the extreme opposite of what I just said, can also be attempted. It can force your brain to concentrate. I turn to music in such moments. A little Backstreet Boys can do wonders to your energy late in the night, I’ve learnt. There exists nothing that Jason Mraz cannot cure. Coldplay takes you to another level of productivity. I might actually write a few sentences, God forbid. I get into a rhythm, typing faster and faster, hoping that the slump is behind me. But of course, iTunes must not cooperate. Justin Bieber begins to blast through my laptop speakers, and all is lost once more.

It becomes harder to be confident of my writing skills at all. Can I call myself a writer when I can’t fucking write? What kind of writer and hopeful-in-the-future-author can’t mould words into a story and make them effortlessly flow across a page? Did Shakespeare ever doubt himself? Did J.K. Rowling ever find herself in a state of absolute…damn, what’s the bloody word…? Would it make me feel any better knowing that the creators of books that my grandchildren will read to their grandchildren also had similar suicidal feelings when writer’s block slapped them across the face? I don’t know what to say. That’s a symptom.

I become adept at losing faith in myself. I know very few people with lesser self esteem in any case, and writer’s block further reinforces my non belief. I begin to think my brain is telling me something. It shut itself down because what I want to write about is not worth the effort. I make a list of all possible ideas that cross my mind, doodling and all. Yet everything I churn out, my brain disagrees. It creates a sense of dissatisfaction with my feelings. I think I’m not doing them justice, leaving them incomplete and somehow slightly unfelt. I don’t know how to explain it in a way that makes it comprehensible, I’m too unsure of it to do that. And again, I guess, that’s the problem in a nutshell.

What would I do if not for my ability to write down what I think and how I feel? How do I conduct myself knowing that there are things to be written and words to be inked but my mind is not up to it? Frustrating isn’t the word, it goes beyond. Insert an appropriate
metaphor here.

I use writing as a release to clear my head, but writers’ block is an entity censoring any clarity-filled thoughts. It’s a sadist little bastard, you know. It creeps up behind me when I least expect it and suddenly that’s it, I have to say goodbye to MS Word and my notebooks for a bit. It’s better to not try since that only makes me feel worse.
The easiest way to deal with it is to not...but just let it pass like any other horrible feeling. And when it comes back inevitably, I will (try) to treat it like an old friend who turns up for undecidedly long vacations and eats all my food without asking (I could try another analogy but I can’t think of one). It’s one of the downfalls of being a writer, I guess, learning how to deal with your own ineptitude and still forging a path for yourself that you can proudly walk down.

I want to end this rant with a quote I read by Ernest Hemingway:

“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”

THAT pretty much sums it up.

Not the only list I have made recently

In the last two weeks I have:

- dyed my hands green/purple/red and pretended to not choke on the fumes of acid dye
- successfully extended the deadlines of two submissions
- had nights where I have come home and crashed at 10 and woken up the next morning with no recollection of what happened the night before
- looked wistfully at the work of other people and wished it was mine
- gone to college at 6 am on a sunday in my nightclothes for a project (it was dark at 6 am, pitch dark)
- compelled my OCD urges to pipe down while working when I glanced at my slowly disappearing-under-junk table
- wished I had time to spend with my camera
- talked to my mother a lot more than usual
- not cared so much about the state of my hair and face
- tried to eat healthy for a day or two
- not heard enough music
- FINALLY watched the Matrix trilogy and have hence not been sure of many, many things
- thought about old friends more than usual
- not blogged as much as I would like

Pyaar,
Kanika
